AI War : The Zenith Remnant Review Page 2

AI War : The Zenith RemnantIt's the huge scale combat that sets apart AI War from other similar games that concentrate on larger ship battles. That doesn't mean you don't get huge ships as well however! The Zenith Remnant features new gigantic units called Golems. These can not be built to start with and must be found and repaired before being used but these are easily the tide turning units of the game! They literally wade into the enemy lines and do untold damage in their own special ways, such as the artillery golem which fires a projectile that can destroy most units in the game in one hit. Their only drawback is that they damage themselves while attacking and each repair job increases the AI progress (more on that later.)

Like I said previously, AI War is a constantly evolving game. Graphically I can see a large improvement since it's early days however this still seems to be happening and while some of the units now look really quite nice, such as the new hangar and starbases there are still some more traditionally drawn units such as the smaller units like fighters and bombers. Generally this doesn't cause too much of an issue as once you've got a game going there's not much chance to examine the smaller units up close and you spend more time zoomed out quite far.

Another super improvement I feel I must mention is unit movement, where this used to be a little zig-zag-ish and stuttery, everything now moves nice and smoothly.

Musically it's still a mixed bag. There are moments I really liked but then there are longer sections where it feels very unsure of itself and even out of time between the different parts. It can be quite off putting, but at least the sound effects are decent enough.

AI War : The Zenith RemnantLet's not forget the title of the game then, because AI War's story is essentially that of Humans fighting computers for survival. The current state of the AI is constantly displayed as it's "Progress". This is a good indication of how dangerous it's become, the higher that number the tougher the next battle is going to be. It starts off low but every time you make progress against the AI, such as blowing up a star base this number increases. I really like this whole concept that the AI gets smarter the better it is at fighting, as if it's learning how to fight you! This ensures that the difficulty increases as you approach the end of a play through and that the last battle is nearly always the most difficult.

The Zenith Remnant then adds plenty of additional content in the way of ships, especially the monolithic Golems. If you already own the main game which is receiving many updates of it's own, this is a no-brainer. If for no other reason than to see the Golems push through the enemy ranks, taking huge amounts of damage but causing even more to the enemy. I still can't bring myself to say that AI War is for everyone, after all is there an RTS that everyone will like?

What I will say is that my friends have a saying while playing RTS games: "It's an army worth of Mordor!" - but this is the first game I've come across where I've felt like saying it!
Score: 80 out of 100

Final Words: Seriously Epic. A no brainer for RTS or space strategy fans.
