I first reviewed AI War back in 2009 and by George it's grown since then. The real problem for me however is that it keeps growing! Usually I feel I can review a game and that review stays current, but in this case most of what I wrote last time is out of date!
So rather than do a "what's changed?" Type of review I thought I'd start almost from scratch and work my way through the game again, mentioning the Zenith Remnant add-on parts as they pass us by (which in the case of the Golems is hard to ignore!) Anyway I digress...
AI War and its add on: The Zenith Remnant make up a 4x strategy conquest type game which is really really big. Seriously, "scale" just didn't matter to these guys, we're talking thousands of ships with many larger star ships bulking up the ranks and supporting the mass of fighters and bombers involved. The space available in the game reflects this with planetary areas being rather huge too. It can all be a bit daunting to newcomers but after a bit of time it all starts to make sense.
You start off, as you'd expect, with hardly anything at all. A small base of operations on your own planet where you start to build your armada in which to conquer the surrounding planets with. Resources are threefold: Crystals, Metals and Energy of which ships require the first two to be created and the third to remain operational. In terms of base structures you can also build Science Stations which provide research points that you spend to obtain more advanced ships.
Ok lets talk ships. There is quite a wide range of different ships available and with the Zenith Remnant this is hugely extended. Starting off basic you have Fighters which are generic shoot-em ships, then you have bombers which are good at hitting armed targets but are weaker against fighters. After this you get missile frigates that are good defense against fighters but not so good against star ships, then you have gattling lasers, anit-armours, scouts, drones...
I could go on but you should get the idea. It's like a huge game of intergalactic Rock Paper Scissors. But it's more like Rock-Paper-Scissors-Fighter-Bomber-Frigate-Electric Shuttle-Raider Cruiser-Missile-and so on. Even when you're talking groups of hundreds of each type of ship, learning their strengths and weaknesses can give you a huge edge especially if you pay attention to ship positioning.
Starships are probably my favourite units, while not forming the backbone of any army you do know about it when they start firing into the enemy ranks. Many starships also boost the effectiveness of smaller units so it's good to have a few about.
