Like I briefly mentioned earlier, Awesome Soccer has several different game modes, each offering a slightly different game type. I mean, it's obviously still soccer, but you have Quick game, Friendly and Tournament. Quick game picks a couple of international teams at random and it's the option you should choose if you only have a few minutes to spare before going out. Friendly is the two player mode, where a mate can join in by using the other key controls. The great thing about this mode is you can also play single player and play your favourite British league team against Brazil! Or you favourite German league team against Italy and so on.
Finally there's the tournament mode, and there you're in for the long haul - or at least the slightly longer haul. This is where you can replicate any league or tournament out there and play as your favourite team.
Musically I wasn't over keen, the tune that plays for the menu sequences isn't anything special but it's better than silence. Sound wise though it wasn't too bad at all, the crowd sounds in particular were impressively immersing.
I did have a few issues graphically. It's felt a bit robotic when every player was running on pitch because the animations played at the same time which detracted from the overall feel. Also, I played as the London Gunners (which I assume from my little research on the subject are logically known as "Arsenal") and spent a fair amount of time controlling one of their strikers, who at the time this league was made for was Thierry Henry. Without going on about it too much I think it would have been good if the sprites had represented their namesakes a little better in terms of appearance as well as statistics. Otherwise the graphics were certainly clear and at no point did I have any problems following what was happening in the game. The User Interface was easy to use and intuitive, I especially liked the buttons that had the footballs in them when the mouse was hovering over.
So overall if I were to try and sum Awesome Soccer up in a few words it would probably be: A very decent arcade Soccer game. It lacks the depth of some similar games I've played, but the trade off is a far more accessible experience. I can't help thinking I haven't seen the best of it due to not having a game pad for more accurate movement but even without that I was able to enjoy this.
Score: 74 out of 100
Final Words: Awesome Soccer Indeed! Great arcade feel!
