I wish I could say Mass Effect 2 was this perfect blend of RPG and Action, but it's not perfect and the blend is more 70% action and 30% rpg.
There's no other way to say it: The loading times are awful, especially (for me anyway) returning to the bridge of the Normandy. And you don't want to stop watching because you might miss a cut screen or message or something that could appear as soon as it stops loading. During loading times a schematic of some description is usually shown, but they're quite short and it's easy to lose interest after having seen only a couple.
A strange bug that I encountered was to do with the cover system, which I have to say was far improved from the original game. Twice I somehow managed to climb huge structures by using the vault command. The first time I found myself on top of a large pillar and couldn't get down! The second and, I have to point out, last time it happened I managed to vault into a space too low to fit into and got stuck in the scenery. Two times isn't a show stopper, but it was sure annoying at the time!
The final bug I noticed was during the new exploration screen. In Mass Effect 2 you travel to different systems and planets using an interactive mini game where you drag your ship around. You can then go into orbit around a planet and start scanning the surface for minerals which I found more fun than I'm proud to admit! The bug was, however that when leaving orbit sometimes I didn't have control of the ship. Luckily I only had to re-enter orbit and leave again, but I still got that "oh noes it crashed!" feeling each time.
Even with these problems however there are just too many good points to the game such as the music. I love this kind of synthesiser arrangement, it just completely suits the game and is reminiscent of games like Deus Ex and Unreal. Which is ironic because it's made using the Unreal engine.
Finally I want to mention the amazing voice talent that lends itself to ME2. Seth Green being my favourite as Joker, he just embodies the role perfectly. Martin Sheen as the "elusive man" is also excellent. There's a whole host of other sci-fi actors and actresses who star but you'd get bored if I mentioned everyone! Although it's worth mentioning that both voice talents for the male and female shepherds return and are great as usual.
Mass Effect 2 isn't for everyone, but anyone who likes adventure mixed in with science fiction, heroes battling against unbeatable odds and suggestive love scenes with aliens (oh yes) should get into this series right now. Right...when does the third one come out?!
Score: 89 out of 100
Final Words: Simply Epic!
