SnakeWorlds Review Page 2

At this point I need to make a terrible confession, I didn't get very far at all. I could consistently get to the final planet of the first "system" but that was my limit. I play a fair amount of games per week and while I don't consider myself to be any kind of pro, I don't think I'm that bad either, and usually I like to play a game I review to completion (or thereabouts.) However the demo does provide access to the 2nd set of levels, set in a spooky graveyard style which was surprisingly atmospheric.

Snakeworlds screenshotSo Snakeworlds is difficult: not impossible, of that I'm sure. But it's certainly not for the casual gamer, it's for someone who wants a good reflex challenge, which it really is.

Another slight issue I have with the game is the graphics, they're not bad but they're not awesome either, they're basic 3D models made well enough so you know what they are but at the same time you're not going "coo!" I understand that independent game makers don't always have the resources, but there are ways of making mediocre graphics look great: I have no idea, for instance, why there wasn't a snow based set of worlds where snow was falling and you had to avoid snowmen and such.

Still there are some nice touches here, such as the snake movement (it's little head bobbing as you move) and I am a fan of the spherical worlds. Guidelines are provided here to help gage how your movement will change if you turn. Each level I’ve come across certainly has it’s own recognisable features, which is quite an achievement with only a few scenery items used!

I really wanted to like Snakeworlds more, it’s great to pick up for a quick blast at a few levels, it doesn’t take long to get into the actual game which is refreshing. But I really wanted to see more level variation (in terms of style) and a more arcade game feel, again the collision detection should really work more in favour of the player.

As usual however there is a free demo that’s well worth your attention. So wriggle off and give it a whirl!

Score: 68 out of 100

Final Words: Just short of being fantastic, but it’s still good!
