Review by Andy Yates

super laser racer - click for larger imageSuper laser racing is a pure, simple and blisteringly fast futuristic racing simulation. It uses the “glowing line” effect that geometry wars made famous, but this is a very different game.

When starting a tournament you are given a choice of ships. These have their various advantages and disadvantages that are clearly shown by their speed/turning/etc. statistics. You then go on to navigate a series of tracks, racing and blasting your way through and around the other competitors until, hopefully, you are proclaimed the winner. Winning a tournament will give you access to the next in that difficulty level, and also some new ships!

New Star Games have obviously improved on their racing engine from New Star GP. One particular feature of Super Laser Racer stood out to me:

Crossovers!

In this game the track crosses over itself, and that often causes mayhem during a race. I also felt it was more forgiving than NSGP in respect to the amount of damage your racer can take. Rather than pit stops you pass through a repair zone where your ship is automatically healed as you pass. This in itself gives the game a whole different dynamic.

I really recommend you try the different ships as some of them are worlds apart from each other and you can end up driving each track in a completely different way. Having the most speed can help you on the easier difficulties, but on normal and hard better steering is a must so you can dodge enemy weapons and mines. Not to mention getting round the tricky corners!

The power ups you pickup in Super Laser Racer are standard but effective. Placing a direct hit on an enemy can knock their steering out and slow them down for a short time giving you a temporary advantage when you can quickly overtake. Mines and Bombs are good if you’re being followed a little too closely. The bad news is that anyone can pick these up and when you’re in a tight group of racers it can get messy very fast!

I didn’t find the “easy” difficulty level enough of a challenge and “hard” difficulty was a little too nuts for me to cope with. Normal provided just enough of a challenge that I felt a sense of accomplishment when winning a race and tournament.

There’s not much that you can complain about with this. What you see is what you get and it’s great! I might argue that some kind of story would be good, however I’m likely to be shot down by the pure racing fans then! It didn’t seem the same without some kind of arch-nemesis racer, perhaps some kind of humanoid-rhinoceros shaking his fist at me and shouting “Damn you Brian Starbringer, I’ll beat you next time!”.

Aside from my wild sci-fi rhinoceros based fantasy wishes this game really is exhilarating, edge of your seat racing fun. Plus, as with all of New Star Games’ offerings, Super Laser Racer is great value for money.
Score: 73 out of 100

Final Words: Super Fun! Simple and Brilliant.
